The UAB ( United States ) publishes new data linking certain foods to cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death. “Diet is important and is a modifiable risk factor for the disease,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. James Shikany of the UAB. “It’s something we can control.”

The latest observational study linking diet to sudden cardiac death follows two types of eating habits: the southern diet, full of fried and processed foods, and the Mediterranean diet, full of fish and vegetables.

“Added fats, fried foods, processed meats, sugary drinks, things like that – those people were at a somewhat higher risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death,” Dr. Shikany said.

Dr. Shikany said there were hundreds of cases of sudden cardiac death, mostly related to people who ate fried and processed foods. He said that those who follow the Mediterranean diet are at less risk.

“I think this is one more test for people to take a closer look at their diets and maybe make some changes,” he said.

Dr. Shikany does not recommend a sudden diet change

“I often suggest to people that if they are interested in making changes, make them gradually,” she said. «Make small changes over time. Maybe not eating meat every day. Maybe reducing to three or four days a week. Maybe not drink sweet sugary drinks every day, but cut them down.

Sudden cardiac death is linked to heart attacks, heart disease, and blocked arteries.

“Any change that can be made from this point on is beneficial,” Shikany said. “People shouldn’t see it as ‘oh well I’ve been on this diet for 20 years, what harm is another year or two going to do?’

The study detected sudden cardiac death primarily in older people, but Dr. Shikany said it can develop over time.

“It starts to develop very early in life, so I don’t think it’s ever too early to pay attention to diet and activity.”
